Disloyalist star continues to rise

On Saturday, Kingston Derby Girls’ Disloyalists headed to The Bunker in Toronto to take on Toronto Roller Derby’s D-VAS (Deadly Viper Assassination Squad). Playing at Downsview Park’s Bunker, the site of the first Roller Derby World Cup, was something like playing on Wrigley Field or at Fenway Park for our team. The D-VAS team receives coaching from some of the best players in Ontario, so tensions were high. Our Disloyalist lineup featured two of the league’s recent drafts, Jamburglar and Ker-Osene, and a range of newer jammer talent, including Yo! Shanity Slam, recently drafted from the Skateful Dead.

Continuing to capitalize on their grasp of pack strategy and ability to work as one, the Disloyalists pulled quickly ahead, and though the D-VAS surged back in the second half, they were never able to close the gap between the two teams. The final score was 314 to 55 for the Disloyalists.

TORD were wonderful hosts (cheesecake brownies!) — thank you, TORD and D-VAS, for having us and for the great game. Our team did us proud in the Bunker; we’re also proud that two of our refs, Fraud Flintstone and John Eh Smackdonald, represented our zebras well on the track. The Kingston Derby Girls are earning a reputation for excellence in the derby world, and we can’t wait to see where this season continues to take us!

MAYhem, indeed!

Over 1,000 fans flocked to the Kingston Memorial Centre by the light of the super moon last Saturday night for KDG’s season opener: an unqualified success. Four teams rocked the track in two action-packed bouts — what a great way to kick off derby season in Kingston!

The night opened with the introduction of KDG’s newest teams, the graveyard-risen Skateful Dead and the post-apocalyptic Rogue Warriors. Both teams have a busy season coming up, with away games and scrimmages as well as a house-league championship that, judging by MAYhem, will be a nail-biting rivalry all year long! Both teams recently welcomed new players after KDG’s spring draft and the combination of the KDG veterans’ expertise and the energy of the league’s newest recruits made for an exciting and well-played bout. The teams fought hard for the full 60 minutes, and the Dead made an amazing near-comeback in the second half, but in the end the Rogues took the first victory of the year with a score of 141-115. The Dead will certainly be out for revenge at the next home game for these two teams; you won’t want to miss their rematch at Carnival Carnage on July 14.

Our Disloyalists took centre stage in the second half of the evening with an impeccably played bout against the South Simcoe Rebel Rollers. Kingston’s team quickly took and held an impressive lead, showcasing their many skilled jammers and some amazing new strategies, illustrating beautifully that strategic planning and practice is key in this hard-hitting game. Final score was 203-40 for the Disloyalists.

Want to watch KDG’s star continue to rise? You can see the Disloyalists in action this Saturday, May 12 against Toronto Roller Derby’s DVA-s at the Bunker in Toronto, and the Rogue Warriors take on the Oz Roller Girls at home on June 16th.

Don’t forget, tickets for all our home bouts are available online, and it’s not too late to buy season tickets!

Durham domination … and an anniversary to celebrate!

Happy birthday, Kingston Derby Girls! That’s right, today is the second anniversary of our very first practice. It is astonishing how far this league has come in such a short time: from just over fifty women who could barely stand on rollerskates and couldn’t tell a jammer from a blocker, to three teams — still over fifty women strong — of skilled, knowledgeable, bad-ass derby girls.

We showed exactly how far we’ve come last night in Ajax, where the Skateful Dead came out ahead of a strong and hard-hitting Durham farm team 115 to 67 and the Disloyalists took down Durham’s travel team, the Devils, 193 to 86. Our game MVPs were Box Punch for the Skateful Dead and Mr. Kristi for the Disloyalists. Congratulations to both teams on some beautiful, intelligent derby and many thanks to DRRD for hosting us — and for the beautiful trophies!

Durham, are you ready for us?

Tomorrow, two KDG teams are heading west on the 401 to take on Durham Region Roller Derby! The Skateful Dead will be taking on DRRD’s farm team, while the Disloyalists confront the DRRD Devils.

You may remember last August’s nailbiter bout between the Disloyalists and the DRRD Devils — it was one of the hardest-fought battles of the season, with the Disloyalists squeaking out the Devils to win 73 to 71 in the final jam. This time we’re on DRRD’s home turf, and this team is out for revenge. Both teams have been training hard in the off-season and both teams want to win!

If you’re going to be in the Durham area or the GTA, head on over to the Ajax Community Centre to watch these two epic battles for flat-track dominance. The doors open at 5:30 pm, and all the details you need are here.

Wish us luck!
